Know Your Location During Severe Weather

Whether you are watching weather coverage on television or using a weather app, it is important to know exactly where you are located on a map. When a warning is issued, you need to quickly determine whether it applies to your area.

During severe weather events, we occasionally receive social media messages asking, “What about my location?” Many of these questions stem from difficulty reading weather maps.

Unfortunately, during active severe weather, we do not have the time or personnel to respond to individual location-specific messages. The maps we post—along with those shown on television—clearly outline the warned areas and provide the information you need.

We encourage all residents to take time now, before severe weather occurs, to familiarize themselves with:

Major highways and roads near their home

Nearby cities and communities

County boundaries

Their location relative to surrounding towns

Being comfortable reading a weather map can save valuable time when warnings are issued.
